Layoffs

According to Bloomberg, since the beginning of this financial crisis the banking sector has announced a total of 137.166 layoffs worldwide. The geographic breakdown is the following:

* Americas: 93.196 (-5,7%)
* Europe: 43.180 (-1,9%)
* Asia: 790 (-0,2%)

At the top of the list, you will find three US banks: Citigroup (23.500), Lehman Brothers (13.390) and Bank of America (11.150). In Europe, so far the biggest contributor to banking unemployment is Commerzbank (9.000 layoffs).

Overall, the worldwide attrition within the banking sector has been 3,1% of its workforce. Now, the adjustments will likely spread to other sectors of the economy. And probably, at a greater rate.
